GUARDIAN I MODEL # 1384-A
AUTOMATIC FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

FOR  RESIDENTIAL KITCHEN RANGE TOP PROTECTION

SCOPE :

This specification includes minimum requirements for fire extinguishing systems which discharge chemical from fixed nozzles by means of expellant gas. It contains essentials necessary to ensure compliance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.), and Federally required response time tests.

PURPOSE :

This specification is prepared for the use and guidance of those charged with the purchasing, designing, and approving fire-extinguishing systems pre-engineered for residential kitchen range top protection.

DEFINITIONS :

For the purpose of clarification, the following general terms used with special technical meanings in this specification are defined:

WET CHEMICAL: Normally a solution of water and potassium carbonate-based chemical, potassium acetate-based chemical or a combination thereof, which forms an extinguishing agent.

LISTED: Equipment or materials included in a list published by Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.).

SHALL: Indicates a mandatory requirement.

SHOULD: Indicates a recommendation or that which is advised but not required.

APPLIANCE: For the purpose of this specification, appliance means a residential type kitchen range supplied by gas or electricity to power and heat range top burners.

PURCHASE INTENT :

The purchaser reserves the right to reject any or all bids and to accept the bid they deem to be in their best interest and will not necessarily be bound to accept low bid. All exceptions if any shall be listed on a separate sheet entitled "Exceptions of Listed Specifications". The listed exceptions must be fully explained with alternate features or design proposed. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in the bid being deemed non-responsive.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION :

The fire extinguishing system shall be capable of detecting a cooking grease fire origination on the range top, extinguish the fire, and prevent reignition, while at the same time, shut-off the gas or electric supply to the surface elements on the kitchen range top. Each system shall be provided with all means to distribute the chemical agent, fire detection components, container for storing the chemical, valve assembly with pressure gauge, mounting bracket for container, and appliance shut-off device. Except for shut-off device, these components shall be provided factory assembled and ready for installation.

CERTIFICATION :

The fire extinguishing system shall have a current U.L. listing and must be certified to meet Federally required response times to operate and extinguish a fire within 90 seconds after auto ignition of cooking oil in a test vessel. Also, the exposure temperature for the detector links shall not exceed the maximum temperature as specified on Table 4.1 of Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.) Standard 33. Standard for Heat Responsive Links.

CHEMICAL AGENT :

Wet Chemical: Shall conform to the requirements of National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard No. 17A for Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishing Systems.

CYLINDER AND VALVE ASSEMBLY :

The extinguisher cylinder and valve assembly shall be provided fully charged with chemical and pressurized with dry nitrogen in accordance with Listed requirements. A pressure gauge attached to the valve assembly shall be positioned to allow visual inspection when installed within a kitchen cabinet. Maximum allowable height of container (including valve assembly and mounting bracket) shall exceed 12 inches. The container and valve assembly shall be of the re-serviceable type and provide maintenance requirements synonymous with that required for portable hand-held fire extinguishers, according to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 10. The container and valve assembly shall be provided factory assembled to the mounting bracket. Assembly shall include a pre-mounted activation switch for the application shut-off device, actuation spring and necessary attachment for the Fire Detection Unit.

The complete extinguisher cylinder and valve assembly shall be installed in a protected area above the range hood (normally, kitchen cabinets). Installations, which expose extinguisher cylinder and valve assembly to direct cooking heat and grease, will not be accepted.

APPLIANCE NOZZLES :

Wet System: Appliance nozzles shall be constructed of brass, stainless steel or a combination thereof. Appliance nozzles with painted surfaces shall not be accepted. Appliance nozzles shall not extend below the lowest component of the range hood. Design shall provide equal distribution of chemical agent and allow chemical to flow effectively with low velocity to avoid splattering of burning grease.

FIRE DETECTION UNIT :

Reusable Thermal Links: The fire detection unit shall consist of 1/16-inch stainless steel cable. "S" hooks, cable crimps, corner pulleys and reusable thermal links, plus other necessary hardware for complete installation. These components shall be provided factory assembled as one complete unit. Each fire detection unit, when installed, shall provide a thermal link over each cooking surface burner, have no exposed cable ends protruding under range hood, and prevent detection components from splattering grease during system actuation. Components shall not extend (when installed) below the lowest component of the range hood. The temperature rating of thermal links shall prevent pre-mature system actuation from normal cooking temperatures common with residential type gas and/or electric range top burners. Only those fire extinguishing systems to have passed the "Exposure Temperature Test for Detector Links" in accordance with Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.) criteria (Subject 300A) shall be considered. Reusable thermal links shall not require periodic replacement.

CHEMICAL AGENT DISTRIBUTION COMPONENT :

Rigid Piping and Flexible Hose for Wet Chemical: Rigid pipe, pipefittings and flexible hose shall be provided factory assembled and ready for installation into kitchen cabinet space. The use of copper tubing shall not be accepted. Pipe, pipefittings and flexible hose shall comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard No. 17A for Wet Chemical Extinguishing Systems. The combination of pipe and flexible hose shall have been investigated by Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.) and Listed for this service.

APPLIANCE SHUTDOWN DEVICE :

Each system shall be provided with a Listed device to automatically shut-off the gas or electric supply to surface burners on the kitchen range top upon actuation of the fire extinguishing system. The gas or electric supply shall remain "off" until manually reset. Electrical power cut-off to kitchen range hood exhaust fan shall not be required for Underwriters Laboratories Incorporated (U.L.) Listed fore extinguishing systems.

ELECTRICAL RANGE SHUT-OFF :

120-Volt Installation: All wiring, fittings and connections shall comply with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 70 and local codes and ordinances. Each electrically supplied kitchen range appliance shall be provided with a listed 3 pole electrical contactor rated 40 amp inductive 50 amp. Resistive 600 volts a/c, 120v 60 HZ coil. Electric range shut-off devices required.

GAS RANGE SHUT-OFF :

Each gas supplied kitchen range appliance shall be provided with a U.L. Listed Pneumatic operated gas valve. The shut-off is activated by pressure transmitted to the valve through a Teflon tube encased in a stainless steel braided cover that connects tot he valve on one end and to the distribution assembly on the other end. The valve shall be designed to close upon activation of the system and remain closed until manually reset. Valve pipe size shall be unless otherwise specified. Gas range shut-off devices required.

OWNER' S MANUAL :
