Unattended Cooking Causes Kitchen Fire

Unattended cooking led to a kitchen fire yesterday at 805 Colgate, Lt. Debbie Sorrell of the Columbia Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters discovered remains of a fire around the kitchen stove and determined unattended cooking was to blame. The occupants became aware of the fire only after they went upstairs to investigate something they heard fall in the kitchen.

BEAVER DAM, Wis. -- Holiday cooking over Thanksgiving has left at least 100 people homeless here in Dane County.

Fire officials said cooking is the number one cause of fire and fire injuries. It's also a holiday tragedy that keeps occurring.

"We see kitchen fires quite regularly and around the holiday's it is a concern because of the amount of cooking people are doing," said Assistant Fire Chief George Burke, of the Madison Fire Department.
